Working with the NHS

AgorIP aims to provide NHS Wales organisations with a framework for commercialisation, as well as support and capacity to commercialise specific innovations.  The focus during the past 12 months has been on:

  • Recruiting staff to AgorIP, including individuals with commercialisation expertise within an NHS context.
  • Understanding NHS Wales organisations, including their priorities and structures, processes, staff and appetite for commercialisation.
  • Creating a strategy for how AgorIP will embed its commercialisation framework within NHS organisations, and significantly increase the number of NHS innovations commercialised.
  • Starting to raise awareness within the NHS of AgorIP and what we offer.

Over the past year, AgorIP’s NHS portfolio has evolved from largely Swansea-based innovations to include projects with NHS organisations from other parts of Wales (such as Cwm Taf and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Boards, and the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust).

Thirty six of the innovations currently in AgorIP’s pipeline come from or involve the NHS.  As the above building blocks are now in place, the scale of AgorIP’s engagement across NHS Wales will significantly increase during 2018.

Work is also underway to establish a dedicated Panel to assess applications for AgorIP from the NHS.  This will perform an equivalent function to AgorIP’s existing Commercial Panel, but will consider non-commercial benefits to the NHS as well as commercial potential when assessing applications

AgorIP is implementing the following plan to create a commercialisation pipeline for NHS innovations:
